ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
In Spring 2023, AA&PI Student Services launched an internship pilot program in partnership with the Asian American Studies department. AA&PI Student Services Internship Program offers SFSU students the opportunity to receive university credit for their community service provided on campus. Rooted in the values of Ethnic Studies, this internship is intended to help students develop their critical leadership skills in manners to advance access, relevancy, and community into our retention and outreach programming for the AA&PI community at SF State.
Overall, this internship was created to mentor students on how to navigate the field of Student Affairs to advocate and confront systemic barriers that impact Asian American and Pacific Islander students.
This internship is curated to address the 4 P’s that grounds our work towards equity and student success: Purpose, Pathways, Pipeline, and Praxis.
- Purpose: Our focus is on leadership, equity, social justice, and writing with a purpose.
- Pathways: In our spaces, we help students to think about internships, scholarships, and financial aid as they navigate the institution. As well as build authentic and meaningful relationships with their faculty members and each other.
- Pipeline: While the ultimate goal is to help students succeed to graduation, we want to make sure our students are prepared for their career goals and/or graduate school.
- Praxis: In our learning communities, we understand praxis as an ongoing, reflective approach to taking action. We encourage our students, staff, and faculty to research, respond, and reflect to address our needs collectively on campus and in our communities.
To participate in our internship you must be junior or senior standing and enrolled in either ETHS 697 or AAS 688. This is a non-paid internship and It is required for students to complete 100 hours throughout the duration of the internship. This course is a Credit/NC course.
Majors in Asian American Studies or Race and Resistance Studies will have priority.
Learning Outcomes:
Student will:
- Be able to critically analyze their educational experiences and AA&PI students at SF State
- articulate the way their social identities impact their engagement with others.
- identify and know how to respond to the needs in the community through data, research, and community responsive programming
- develop the empathy, self-reflection, and critical thinking skills needed to engage in meaningful dialogue
- Develop leadership philosophies to be implemented in their personal and professional lives.
Internship Requirements
- Support AA&PI Student Services by selecting one of the four areas of involvement or more.
- Weekly meetings, online or in-person
- Office hours for a total of 2 hours per week (events, working on tasks, 1:1’s stopping by the office, etc; online or in-person)
- Attend and participate in a minimum of two AA&PI Student Services and one DECI or student organization event
- Participate in our praxis groups that focuses on research, developing our leadership philosophy, book talks, and office programming.
